Brussels roundtable hailed as a success Print E-mail

On June 29, 2007 the European Commission adopted its first policy document, a green paper on adapting to the impacts of climate change. “Adaptation to Climate Change in Europe: Options for EU Action” describes avenues for action at the EU level, and its main objective is to kick-start a Europe-wide public debate and consultation on the double challenge of making deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change conditions.

Top journalists honoured in Zagreb Print E-mail

The region’s first international media awards for coverage of renewable energy and energy efficiency were presented at an official ceremony in Zagreb onMarch 17. First prize went to Majda Pilibaityte and Mindaugas Nastaravicius for their report “A new nuclear power station for Lithuania: Would it really pay?” Runner- up was Mladen Ilickovic for his report on the state of renewable energy initiatives in Latvia and Croatia.

REC hosts EECCA organisations Print E-mail

For one week at the beginning of February, the REC hosted 19 staff from two regional organisations from the EECCA region: the Central Asia Regional Environmental Center (CAREC) and Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus. The visit was part of a project sponsored by the German Ministry for Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety. Using the REC as a blueprint for foundation, Caucasus REC and CAREC were established also by taking into account local situations and operating environments. Because REC Caucasus and CAREC largely mirror the REC both in mission and structure, it was agreed that a knowhow exchange between the three organisations would not only enhance management capacities, but would also stimulate further organisational cooperation efforts.

Green Pack taken on board in Montenegro Print E-mail

In Montenegro, the Green Pack will be implemented as part of the West Balkan Green Pack project, a regional endeavour encompassing Bosnia andHerzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo. During a two-year implementation period the programme’s goal has been to build capacity, to transfer know-how, and to establish a basis for further worldwide development in the field of education for sustainable development.

For the past six years the REC has supported transboundary cooperation and dialogue between Montenegro and Albania through the Skadar/Shkodra Lake component of REReP project 4.3.23: Transboundary Cooperation through the Management of Shared Natural Resources. During this time, representatives from both countries have participated in building up formal and informal means of cooperation to address this unique transboundary zone.

In March the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) named Jiri Dusik, the REC’s senior advisor for strategic environmental assessment (SEA), as the recipient of the ‘2007 Individual Award for Contribution to Impact Assessment.’

Serbian environment minister visits head office Print E-mail

Serbia’s Minister for Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin visited the REC on July 27 part of his official visit to Hungary. Although just recently established, the Serbian Ministry for Environmental Protection (MEP) has already committed itself to several important tasks, Dragin said while addressing REC senior management personnel.
