On March 17, Hungary’s government quickly and unanimously
adopted a national climate change strategy to assist the
country in meeting obligations under proposed EU legislation
tabled in January, one of which is to slash emissions by 18 percent
(from 1990 levels) by the year 2020. Strategy financing will derive
from sales of Kyoto carbon credits and funds from the Hungarian
government’s environment and energy operational programme,
ENDS reported in mid-February. Environment Minister
Gabor Fodor stressed that energy consumption must be “separated”
from economic growth. |
