US Supreme Court reaches key decision on greenhouse gases

In one of its most important environmental decisions in years, Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Supreme Court announced on April 2, 2007 that it would direct the agency (EPA) to reconsider its refusal to regulate heat-trapping gases in automobile emissions.

In December 2006, the EU’s Council of Ministers presented an ambitious strategy to more effectively protect marine environments across Europe. The stated objective of the strategy is “to promote the sustainable use of the seas and conserve marine ecosystems.”

Proposed convention would protect five mountain ranges in South Eastern Europe

Mountain ranges in South Eastern Europe (SEE) may soon receive new protections under a proposed multilateral environmental agreement based on the existing models of the Alpine and Carpathian conventions. The first draft text of the proposal was discussed in Bolzano, Italy from November 3-4, 2006 by government representatives, NGOs and international organisations.

A significant portion of the principles promoted by the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians <www.carpathianconvention.org> has already been recognised in national policy and legislation. This was one of the main conclusions from assessments drafted in 2005 of the readiness of signatory countries to cooperate on the matters promoted by the Convention.
