Conference announcement
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ecological Investigations in Bosnia, a major conference is being planned for next September to discuss sustainable development in the Bosnian region of Vranice, a valuable ecological area with six endangered species and numerous karstic phenomena. The conference is being organized by 1997 REC Local Grant winner Bosnian Environmental Technologies Association (BETA), a Sarajevo-based NGO composed of scientific institutions and experts in the field of sustainable development. The main goal of the conference is the development of a natural resource development strategy for the country using Vranice as a model. Organizers hope to offer a tour of the Vranice area to conference participants next spring which would serve to inform their presentations for the fall conference. International funding is being requested. "I think this would be an appropriate occasion for the international community to provide (fund) several expert speakers to present current thinking with respect to sustainable development and environmental values," said OHR legal advisor in Bosnia, John Seeronen.
