The Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) is a balanced, timely and independent reporting service that provides daily information in print and electronic formats from multilateral negotiations on environment and development. It is published by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), a charitable non-profit organization based in Winnipeg, Canada. The ENB is a "desktop" publication that is distributed each day to participants at UN negotiations related to environment and development. In addition to the hard-copy version, the Earth Negotiations Bulletin is available in electronic format on international computer networks.
Many UN delegates, NGOs and UN staff consider the Earth Negotiations Bulletin to be essential reading for keeping track of environment and development policy. The Bulletin has received high praise from diplomats, United Nations staff, government officials, non-government organizations, the business community, media and the academic community for its objective and comprehensive presentation of the facts.
In Kyoto, the team of ENB writers, armed only with laptop computers, attended each of the official meetings. At the end of each day, they wrote a 2,000 word summary of the meeting, which was desktop published, translated into French and Japanese, and distributed to each of the participants the following morning. In addition to their printed and electronic versions, the ENB team inaugurated a new video service. Each day thousands of users around the world used their WWW browsers to view a ten-minute video broadcast direct from the Kyoto International Conference Hall. Now that the Kyoto Conference is finished, the ENB team moves on to negotiations on the Prior Informed Consent agreement for the transport of hazardous materials, the Convention to Combat Desertification, the Convention on Biological Diversity and meetings of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.
