On the move

Coming

Two new interns joined the REC from the other side of Europe. EVA-MARIA KNAUS arrived from the Zurich-based Swiss Federal Technical University's Environmental Sciences Department in July to help Jurg Klarer out with his work on Economic Instruments - one of the Sofia Initiatives created during the 1995 Environment for Europe Conference. And DIRK AMTSBERG, with an M.A. in Political Science from Gottingen University, Germany, is here to help the REC with production of Insight, the newsletter for environmental training professionals in Central and Eastern Europe.

REC's Finance Department welcomed a new bookkeeper in July - MIRA VARGA from Budapest.

Moving

A new position opened up at the REC in July, bringing ISTVAN HEGYI away from his old job as Project Officer for the Senior Fellowship Program. Istvan is now the REC's new Development Coordinator for the Office of the Executive Director, with the chief tasks of coordinating the REC's fundraising activities and the development of all of REC's programs.

New Faces at Local Offices

The Romanian Local Office had a few changes with DIANA MANOLELI replacing IOANA LUCA as Project Manager, BOGDAN COJOCARU replacing MIHAI CRISAN as financial assistant, and VALENTINA NICOLAE coming on board as the Office's new assistant. In Estonia, TIINA GUUSMANN will be giving advice on the books as the new financial assistant, and BELIN MOLLOV has left the Bulgarian Office for greener pastures.

Flood of Junior Fellows

This summer's Junior Fellows were granted unique privileges by nature's creator - they could take a small boat to their bungalows in REC's flooded backyard in early July. The lucky fellows included MILKA ASENOVA from the Veliko Tarnovo University in Bulgaria, specializing in Geography; KATARZYNA DANIELSKA from Polish NGO "Swiebodzice," involved with the environmental problems of the Black Triangle; MELISA LJUSA from Bosnia & Herzegovina NGO "BETA," an association of experts, professionals and scientific institutions gathered around the concept of sustainable development; EMMA INGELA VIDMARK from the Swedish Society of Nature Conservation, the largest environmental NGO in Sweden; JASMIN SADIKOVIC from Croatian NGO "Green Osijek;" ALI BUZURUKOV from Tajikistani NGO "Tajik Socio-Ecological Union" and PETER CHUKLY from Hungary, "private" environmentalist and graduate of Budapest's ELTE University.
