  GERALD FANCOJ joined the Information Exchange Team (IET) as a project officer for the Business Information Service. Gerald, who is supported by the Austrian Government in this position, has a masters of science degree in environmental change and management from Oxford University and a masters in urban and regional planning from the Technical University of Vienna. Gerald's immediate challenge will be to organize market surveys and to produce a business directory of four new countries.

  IET also welcomes CSILLA ILKEI as the new library assistant. Csilla will be responsible for supporting the development and maintenance of all library resources, including the REC's hard copy materials. She will also assist visitors to the library and help with information requests. She holds a university degree in Library Sciences from Szombathely, Hungary and also served as an intern at Hungarian National Library and a university in the UK.

  OREOLA IVANOVA is joining the REC this month as Senior Advisor in Government affairs. Oreola is a well-known personality in the region, due in large part to her work in organizing the Sofia conference. She has served in the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment for 16 years, holding several key positions including Head of the European Integration Unit and Chief Expert in the Unit on International Cooperation.

Going

  According to IET Team Leader Winston Bowman, Librarian JUDIT BOUABDALLAH (now Berthelsen) is leaving her post because "she loves a Norwegian more than the REC." Judit was married in August and will be heading way north with her new family this month.

  REC Initiatives bid farewell to TOMAS HAK this summer.Tomas completed his report on the Assistance to the Environmental Action Program Approach (see page 18) and has returned to Czech Republic to finish his PhD at Charles University in Prague.

  Earmarked Grants Coordinator KRISTINA SZABADOS also left REC in August to work on energy issues at Hungary's Energy Club.

The faces of REC

As of August, there are 62 people working in the REC head office including the Local Office of Hungary but with the exception of Interns and Fellows.There are 44 core staff members, and 18 project-based personnel. The 28 women and 34 men of REC are from 17 different countries from the Region and abroad.
