The facilities, which include a conference center, accommodations for visitors and an office building, were once the property of the Hungarian Ministry of Environment which managed training programs there years ago. REC hopes to return it to it's "original purpose" by making the Center literally open to more people. The conference center opened earlier this year and has been used for several international events already. These facilities should eventually help contribute to the financial sustainability of the REC through the small profits gained by hosting green events there.
The new office building will provide more space, allowing for better working conditions for staff and room for additional workstations for interns and fellows. There are also plans for restructuring and expanding the library at the new site, making it more useful and user-friendly for staff and visitors.
The third building at the site will serve as the Junior Fellows bungalow and as accommodations for visitors to REC.
Local Office Hungary will remain at the Silk Mill site in Budapest, but will now claim the small conference room as their own. Laszlo (Pepe) Perneczky and Monika Kadar have been consulting with other Local Offices to help them learn the in's and out's of running the office as a separate entity. They plan to host an opening event of their own in October.
