EC ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSIONER Ritt Bjerregaard visited REC head office in April.
During her first official visit to Hungary, European Community Environment Commissioner RITT BJERREGAARD visited the REC to meet with team leaders and address the Hungarian Environmental Council. Bjerregaard saluted Hungary's achievements in restructuring the economy and restoring democracy, but did not pull any punches, however, concerning the road ahead. "It is not going to be easy for Hungary and other associated partners to achieve the level of environmental protection in the European Union. This will require political courage and adequate priority of resources," she said. Bjerregaard further emphasized the importance of public participation in decisionmaking and encouraged NGOs to continue their efforts to enhance public understanding of and pressure for the environment.
