The project understands that foreign investment, the modernization of outdated, polluting technologies, and the privatization of state-owned companies are all necessary for the healthy economic growth of the Region. The aim is to encourage cooperation between eastern and western European NGOs so the potential adverse effects of intense economic development can be dealt with before they become a problem in Central and Eastern Europe.
A SEED's IMPs project hopes to facilitate public participation and to disseminate information in a number of ways, including a seminar on "Transitional Investments in Eastern Europe: The Social and Environmental Effects" to be held in Strasbourg, France from 21 to 28 May. A SEED also hopes to publish an action handbook providing people with ideas and tools to confront transitional investments in their own countries in June, and an IMPs newsletter providing campaign news and general information is scheduled to be published at the end of April.
IMPs organizers hope an information database on multinationals investing in Central and Eastern Europe will be available in the near future. This database would be available on the Internet and would facilitate information flow.
