NGOs subsequently selected five regional focal points worldwide, one of which is Europe East and West, to coordinate discussion and nominate NGO representatives for Council meetings. These focal points will liaise with a central contact point in Washington, a Mr. Achim Steiner from the IUCN.
The successful NGO representative will be affiliated with a "GEF-accredited" NGO. The GEF has set the criteria for accreditation so that small grassroots organizations can easily satisfy the requirements. To receive accreditation from GEF, NGOs need only fill out a simple "NGO Accreditation Form." Once accredited, NGOs will be able to receive GEF documentation, participate in NGO consultations, and attend council meeting.
The GEF grants resources to address climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution of international waters and depletion of the ozone layer. The GEF is implemented by the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Environment Program, and the World Bank.
