Green Cross says it can help you

Created at the Rio Summit in 1992 and officially launched in Kyoto, Japan on 20 April 1993, Green Cross International is a trans-national organization that seeks to promote dialogue and cooperation on environmental issues. With national organizations already active in Switzerland, Russia, Estonia, and Hungary (application to be accepted early this year), the Green Cross International program focuses on disaster prevention, natural resource management, environmental education, and ecologically responsible legislation. Green Cross International, based in Geneva and headed by Mikhail Gorbachev, hopes to bring together NGOs, business, science, environmental, and governmental groups from every sector of society to develop new approaches to environmental problems and issues.

GCI's head office in Switzerland serves as an international coordinator, but it is actually national Green Cross organizations that implement projects. Individuals or organizations which would like to work with GCI are encouraged to call the Geneva head office. An application/questionnaire will be sent which asks for basic information about the group and the project concerned. Upon receiving the completed questionnaire, GCI will contact other individuals or organizations in the country so as to inform them of the proposed project. In this way duplication of projects can be minimalized and greater cooperation and dialogue encouraged.

National Green Cross offices are expected to be economically self-sufficient. Money and funding for projects come from national offices, but, GCI also helps in the organization and funding of cross-border programs. An example of this is GCI's Partnership for Environmental Emergency Response Project (PEER) which seeks to improve accident prevention in the transportation of chemicals in Central and Eastern Europe. GC Switzerland, with the cooperation of its local chapters and CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Council), will help to select experts from the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Russia who will receive training from chemical accident experts in Switzerland in an effort to prevent catastrophes and raise the quality of response in case of accidents. At present this project is in its preparatory phase with the training inception to begin by March of this year.
