Senior fellows coming to work at REC
Goran Arsov, FYR Macedonia
Goran Arsov was selected as the REC's first senior fellow and began
his two-week fellowship at the REC Head Office in Budapest in August.
Arsov is an ecological engineer in the Environmental Protection
Department of the Zletovo Metallurgical and Chemical Company (MHK),
located in Titov Veles, 55 km south of Skopje in the Former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia. MHK produces large quantities of zinc, lead,
sulfuric acid, fertilizer, cadmium, and silver. Arsov admits that his
company "is the biggest source of pollution in Titov Veles."
Arsov spent most of his time in Budapest researching at the REC's
library and the Hungarian National Environmental and Water Manage-ment
Library. But he also visited companies in Hungary and the Czech
Republic that use professional teams to help them reduce pollution. He
hopes to apply some of their successful techniques at Zletovo MHK.
Valerija Kelemen-Pepeonik, Croatia
Since Arsov's fellowship, two more fellows have worked at the REC Head
Office. Valerija Kelemen-Pepeonik from the City of Zagreb's local
administration was here in September. She noted that she was able to
begin talks with various city officials and is returning to Zagreb with
ideas for a number of new cooperation projects.
Valery Semichaevsky, Ukraine
Valery Semichaevsky was at the REC for the month of October. He works
for the National Ecological Center, an independent Ukrainian NGO. While
at the REC, he studied the effectiveness of NGO networking in the
Region, and also attended a seminar on public participation in
Slovakia. (See related interview in this issue). He found that although
Slovak and Ukrainian NGOs have many common problems, Ukrainian NGOs
have much more difficulty in participating in the European
environmental movement and in acquiring funding for projects.
