Greenpack
unveiled
The package focuses on different aspects of environmental protection and sustainable development and includes a teacher's handbook with lesson plans, fact sheets for students, a video cassette with animated clips and films, an interactive CD-ROM, and a game concerning environmental dilemmas. More information about the package is available under the "Programmes" subsection at To date, some 1,600 teachers have been trained to use the Green Pack in Poland; that means an estimated 150,000 students have been taught its lessons. The response of teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. Credit for this success goes in large part to the REC's Polish country office, which prepared a revised edition of the Polish version of the pack. An English-language version of the Green Pack will be presented at the May Environment for Europe conference in Kiev. The package will be unveiled at a side event on education and sustainable development which will be organised by the REC and ECO-Forum, an alliance of European environmental groups. The REC is in discussions with the Green Pack's sponsor, Toyota, about developing what has been dubbed a "citizens' version" of the package. The package has inspired other ideas as well. The REC is negotiating with the Italian Ministry of Environment on an educational project for the Environment and Health Conference in 2004. National or regional projects will have to raise awareness of national contributions to trans-boundary environmental problems. NGOs are expected to show how sources of pollution affect areas beyond administrative or political boundaries. Rural development and agriculture Under the umbrella of the Sofia Biodiversity Initiative, the conference Nature Conservation, Rural Development and Agriculture in CEE was held in Bled, Slovenia February 3-5, 2003. Representatives from ministries of environment, regional planning officials, European Commission officials and environmental groups discussed the development of Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (SAPARD). Caucasus grants awarded Three grants were awarded to NGOs in the Caucasus region within the project Implementing the Aarhus Convention: Practical Tools for Public Participation. The funds were provided by the Italian Ministry of Environment. The project, operated in conjunction with REC-Caucasus, covers eight countries.
