Letter from the Executive Director

An open letter regarding tragic events in U.S.

The day after the tragic death and destruction that occurred Sept. 11, when airliners crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C., Toni Popovski, the executive director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe sent the following open letter to the center's American friends and supporters.

It was with disbelief, horror and shock that my colleagues and I followed the tragic news from America that reached the Regional Environmental Center late yesterday afternoon. On behalf of Mr. Allan Gromov, Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Members of the Board of the REC, and all our staff, I convey to you our deepest feelings of sympathy. Our thoughts are with the many thousands in America who now wrestle with the aftermath of this unprecedented tragedy.

You know that the REC as a whole, and nearly all staff, have many official and, more importantly, personal, ties to America and Americans. Somehow things are in a completely different dimension right now, and it is very difficult for all of us on a personal level to go about our daily chores. We try to surround our American colleagues with personal concern, and treat them as a natural focus for expressing our own feelings of solidarity.

The REC always stood for building democracy, cooperation and understanding between the diverse cultures of our region. Standing by this mission and strengthening our efforts to implement it will be the true testimony to our commitment to the ideals of our friends in America.

Very sincerely yours, Toni Popovski, Executive Director
