Letter from the Editor

Changing with the region

By Pavel Antonov

As The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) enters its second decade, the region it serves is undergoing dynamic development. The first Central and Eastern European (CEE) applicants are likely to enter the European Union within the next five years. Meanwhile, South Eastern Europe (SEE) is seeking a quick recovery from political and economic instability, and the people of SEE are paying more attention to their environment, which is among the best preserved in Europe.

In the past ten years The Bulletin, which seeks to serve this changing region, has grown too. It has become a unique comprehensive magazine, covering environmental issues with a regional perspective. Kindly supported by the US Environmental Protection Agency, The Bulletin meets its tenth anniversary with several fresh developments: We will be using more colour, to help us better deliver the message about nature in CEE. A new, more-interactive Bulletin web site will be launched. Tom Popper will be assistant editor. And as the new editor, I will contribute a regional media and environmental background and a sensitive eye to the CEE point of view.

The Bulletin will also seek to focus more on South Eastern Europe. This part of Europe, which has recently seen war, authoritarian regimes and economic hardship, is also one of the regions where nature is best preserved. Now the SEE region has a good chance to make fast progress. But there is also a good chance that nature will be sacrificed for the political and economic aspirations of a minority of the people.

We want our readers to take part in the changes with us. While we serve the needs of our regular readers, we will also reach out to people who are not necessarily in the environment field, but for whom environmental issues in CEE are still important — business people, educators, the media. We encourage letters to the editor, and will make an effort to print them on this page. Letters can be sent to the Editor, care of the REC, or by e-mail to: editor@rec.org. We also encourage everyone to fill out the enclosed reader survey. We hope you stay with us as we grow and change, while continuing to do the work of covering the environment of the CEE region.
